Door stuck open
Safely, right now
- Don't force it down or keep trying the remote. Leave the door as it is.
- Keep people, pets and cars out from under it.
- The red release cord stays untouched while the door is open, because the door can fall.
Door won't close
Safely, right now
- Don't keep hitting the button. Repeated tries can do more damage than the first fault.
- Don't step or reach under the door to move anything. If a bin, bike or snow is in the way, mention it when you call.
- Don't bypass or re-aim the safety sensors by the floor to make it close.
Spring snapped
Safely, right now
- Leave the door and the opener alone: no lifting it by hand, no pressing the button.
- Nobody and nothing goes near the door: people, pets and cars stay clear.
- Don't pull the emergency release while the door is open. It can drop.
Car stuck inside
Safely, right now
- Don't drive into the door or try to force it open.
- If you heard a bang or the door feels heavy, don't pull the release or lift it. A spring may be broken.
- Leave the car inside for now and plan another ride.
In most homes in Toronto the door between the garage and the kitchen is the least guarded one, so the garage door itself matters for security. We make sure it closes and locks fully, replace worn emergency-release cords, add a manual lock where wanted, and clear old codes from the opener.

The fix, explained · Toronto
What is the door doing?
EmergencyTorsion Spring ReplacementLooking up at the coil above the door, you can see a clean split with a gap of several centimetres between the two halves.
The fix
Torsion spring replacement restores the counterweight that makes a garage door light enough to lift. A sectional door often weighs more than a fridge, and the spring above the opening carries nearly all of that load, storing energy as the door closes and releasing it as it opens.
Until then
When a spring breaks, the safe approach for the household is to leave the door where it is, keep people and vehicles clear, and avoid running the opener, which can damage the top section, the trolley or the gear drive.
Pull the manual release only when the door is fully closed unless a technician asks otherwise; a door disconnected while partly open can move on its own if the springs are out of balance.

EmergencyOff-Track Garage Door ResetYou tapped the door with the bumper while backing in, barely a nudge, and now the bottom corner has swung inward.
The fix
The finish of an off-track reset matters as much as the re-seating. Once the rollers are home and the track is true, the door is disconnected from the opener and moved by hand through its whole travel while every roller is watched in its rail.
Until then
Never run the opener on a door that is off its track or hanging crooked; every cycle drives the racked door harder into the rails and can pull the track from the wall or tear a hinge.

EmergencyGarage Door Cable ReplacementAfter years of slushy winters the cables look thinner near the bottom brackets, with rust streaks running down the door where they attach.
The fix
What you get back is a door that behaves as it did when it was new. Both corners rise and fall together, the bottom seal meets the floor along its whole length, and the opener runs without straining or reversing.

EmergencyExtension Spring ReplacementThe home inspector's report on the house you are buying flags the garage door: extension springs with no safety cable running through them, coils…
The fix
Choosing the right spring is a matter of weight, not colour. Extension springs are rated for the weight they are meant to lift, and the correct pair for your door is found by weighing the door itself with the opener released, then checking that figure against the wire size, coil diameter and length of the old springs.

Book soonEmergency Release RepairA previous owner knotted the release cord around the rail and stacked storage shelves right beneath it.
The fix
Most households meet the release for the first time in a power outage, usually in winter. The door is shut, the car is inside, and the red handle is the only way to move the door.
Until then
Pull the release with the door fully closed whenever possible, and keep the opening clear as you do.
Lift a door by its handles or the gripping points on the panel face, never at the joint between sections, which closes as the door bends around the track.
Book soonGarage Door Opener Diagnosis and RepairIt is a January morning and the door lifts about a hand's width, groans, and settles back down.
The fix
Garage door opener diagnosis is a fault-finding visit with a fixed order of tests. The technician confirms power at the ceiling receptacle, tries each control on its own, checks the safety sensors and their indicator lights, examines the drive train from motor to trolley, and reads any flash code the unit is showing.
Until then
Pull the release with the door fully closed whenever possible, and keep the opening clear as you do.
Never drive a vehicle at a closed door to get out; the door collapses and the stored tension in the counterbalance is released.

What the census means at the door
58%
Older homes. About 58% of homes in Toronto were built in 1980 or earlier, according to the 2021 Census.
Where most houses were built a generation or more ago, a good share of garage doors are still the originals: wood or early steel sections on extension springs. Those doors respond well to fresh pulleys, safety cables and a careful balance, and the technician carries the parts for them.
23%
Single-detached houses make up about 23% of homes in Toronto (2021 Census).
Townhouses built in rows tend to have identical doors from the same builder, so when springs and openers age they do so together along the street. Owners often arrange service for several doors at once, and we can plan a single visit that covers the row.

Let a technician come out to Toronto.
When a garage door in Toronto has stopped, the household is usually stuck too, so we organise the day around getting the door moving safely. The technician clears the fault, checks the rest of the door so the next part does not follow, and explains what he did before he drives away.
Highfield, Kipling Heights, Rexdale, Thistletown and West Humber Estates
We show, then tell. Worn cables, tired springs and misaligned sensors are pointed out on the door itself, so the explanation makes sense.
Clean-up included. Old parts are removed, surfaces wiped and the floor swept before we consider the visit complete.
The right repair for your situation. Some doors deserve a full refresh; others need one part. We help you weigh that against how long you plan to keep the door.

Which fix fits?
IfThe door hangs lower on one side and looks twisted in the opening.
One cable has usually slipped off its drum; the door needs to be secured before it is re-seated.
IfA roller has popped out and the panel is leaning away from the track.
ThenOff-track door reset.
We lift the section back into the track and look for what forced the roller out.
IfA bracket has pulled away from the wall and the track wobbles.
Fresh lag bolts into solid framing, and a check that the track spacing is still correct.
IfThe small light on one of the sensors near the floor has gone dark, or it flickers when someone walks past the track.
ThenPhoto-Eye Sensor Alignment or Replacement.
Photo-eye sensor service brings back the invisible beam that runs across the bottom of your doorway and lets the opener close with confidence.
Things people wonder
What happens if my door's design has been discontinued?
It happens with older doors, since embossing patterns, joint profiles and colours change over the years. The technician looks for the nearest current section from the same manufacturer and describes how it would differ in look and fit. Sometimes the difference is minor and acceptable; sometimes the joint no longer mates. In that case the options are a section from a compatible series, or replacing the door as a whole, and both are explained before anything is ordered.
How long do garage door rollers last?
It depends on what they are made of and how often the door moves. Builder-grade plastic wheels with no bearings often show wear after only a few years. Steel and nylon rollers with seven to thirteen ball bearings are typically rated for ten to fifteen thousand cycles, roughly the life of a torsion spring, which for many households means seven to ten years. Sealed-bearing nylon rollers are rated far higher. A door used many times a day, or one living with salt and slush, shortens all of those.
Does the new cable have to match the old one exactly?
It has to match the door, which may not be the same thing if the old cable was wrong. Length is set by the door height, the drum profile and the lift type; diameter and construction by the door's weight. A cable that is a little long overlaps on the drum and wears; one that is short leaves the door out of level. The technician measures the door and the drum rather than trusting the old cable.
What is the difference between extension springs and torsion springs?
They balance the door in different places. Extension springs are the two long coils that run beside the horizontal tracks and stretch as the door closes; they work through pulleys and cables. A torsion spring is wound on a shaft above the door opening and turns drums that wind the cables. The parts, the way tension is set and the service itself are different, so it helps to say which you have when you call.
